Tight knots of silk fabrics that tighten the coordinal relation among two communities at Nathnagar locality, the hub of silk activities for last several decades, is broken !
Nathnagar which even set example of communal harmony during the infamous riots of 1989 here where two community people engaged in silk industry, hardly bothered about the old relations and traditions. Some meager incidents mainly engineered by few hooligans and also due to ineffectiveness of administration, tension triggered among the people from two communities who pelted stones, hurled bombs and also exchanged fire against each other last evening.
The situation here turned serious last evening but later was under controlled after administrative swung into action. However, administration ordered for snapping of the internet services in the district to prevent rumour mongering after communal clashes posed threat to the society.
Tension still mounting high this morning when a mob of local residents encircled Nathnagar PS against the act of police which picked up three youths in connection of last evening incident. “The administration always plays hostile with the sentiment of the larger sections, how they arrested the three youths while no action is yet initiated against the opponents who started attacking on the procession,” alleged Ramprakesh, a local resident.
However due to pressure, police finally set the three youths free from the PS today morning.
Passing of ‘Vikram Samvat’ procession of motorcyclists to mark the new year in Hindi calendar which was taken out on Saturday afternoon by Arjit Shaswat, local level BJP leader and the elder son of Ashwani Kumar Choubey, union health minister, through Medni Chowk, hardly a stone thrown distance from Nathnagar PS, was the reason of spreading the tension.
Local residents opposed the passing of the procession and also the songs playing on DJ sets . Heated exchange of words soon gave way to clashes. The situation worsened as some miscreants torched a two-wheeler and vandalized shops in the area.
Police had to fire several rounds to quell the rampaging mob. One constable, Prabhash Chandra Gayani sustained bullet injury while other four constables and two ASIs were hurt in the brick batting by the warring groups.
Crude bombs and petrol bombs were also hurled even as social workers tried to broker peace between the warring groups.
The role of administration is in question as it had no prior information about the procession or about some minor incident which had taken place early before in the morning when some youths misbehaved with some ladies who were returning back after taking a holly dip in river Ganga.
The administration now busy in fixing responsibility on BJP for taken out the procession without prior permission. “The organizers didn’t take any written permission for taking out the procession,” said Sushil M Singh Khopde, inspector general of police, Bhagalpur zone. While countering the
allegation, Arjit Shaswat claimed that they already talked with concerned higher officials but when they went to the sub divisional officer (SDO), Bhagalpur for giving the application, the officer was not at his office. “Secondly who gave the permission to some local anti socials to fire on the motorcyclists? Or why police remained silent when the antisocial elements openly creating vandalism in front of the PS and even pelting stones on police and manhandled the cops?,” asked Shaswat.
“It’s was total failure of administration as well as the intelligence wings. Such minor incident could have been countered much before yesterday evening,” alleged many while giving references of many such incidents in past and the infamous communal carnage of 1989 here.
FIRs from two sides have been registered with Nathnagar PS and police has concentrated on the cases of destroying of vehicles, shops and other properties by the rioters. The situation is under controlled but tensed.
